GRANT COUNTY AREA:
Grant County has a very large area of 4,528 square miles, but with a very small population of 8,100. Canyon City is the county seat of Grant County with a population of 625, and adjoins the small town of John Day, population 1,940, on its north side. The principle interest of Grant County is livestock production, lumber production and recreation.

Grant County was created from Wasco and Umatilla Counties and named for General Ulysses S. Grant, U.S. Army, assigned to the protection of early settlers in Oregon. After gold was discovered on Whisky Flat in 1862, prospectors swarmed into the region. Over $20 million in gold dust and nuggets were taken from the Canyon City area.

Today's gold is cattle ranching. Livestock have the right of way on roads, and each spring several herds are driven along John Day's main street from winter to spring pasture. In recent years recreation has also become a major industry. Located in the center of the largest stand of Ponderosa pine in the United States, Grant County has over 700 miles of fishable trout streams as well as several lakes and miles of hiking trails in the small but rugged Strawberry Range. Large herds of mule deer and Rocky Mountain Elk roam the hills and mountains.

The trend for Grant County is near stable. Whereas the population was 8,329 in 1950, it is now 8,100 with a loss of 229 people over a 40-year period.
