Location:
The
ranch is located in the Northeast corner of Grant County approximately
eleven miles northwest of Monument, Oregon. Monument is on the North Fork
of the John Day River, which is a classified Wild and Scenic River at
the headwaters. By road, the ranch is approximately two hours southwest
of Pendleton, Oregon, three hours southwest from LaGrande, Oregon or 1
½ hour's northwest of John Day, Oregon.
AREA
AND ELEVATION:
The JV Ranch is located in the southwestern portion of the Blue Mountains.
Next to the "Cascades", the "Blues" are the most significant and most
popular mountain range in Oregon. The elevation on the ranch ranges from
around 2,400 feet to 3,700 feet above sea level.
CLIMATE:
This elevation provides all four distinct seasons. The moisture for the
area usually happens in the fall, spring and winter with a total rainfall
around 11-12 inches at the lower elevations and 14-16 inches at the higher
elevations. Most winters, there is snowfall 5-10 times, but it often melts
off. The summers are warm and dry with some hot weather in the afternoons
about 30 days of the year. The spring is early with green grass starting
late February or early March. Annual precipitation, including melted snow,
is 14.28 inches. Average temperature in January is 30.7 degrees F. Winter
temperatures can drop to 15 degrees below zero and summer temperatures
can reach 100 degrees.
